Bike Carrier / July 20, 2018 / Avelaine Labrecque
The normal passenger vehicle is the car that is seen the most with a roof bike rack installed. This includes 4 door sedans coupes and hatchbacks. The size and height of these automobiles is what makes roof racks ideal. Cyclists can easily put their bicycles on and take them off with ease. It is possible to install these on an SUV or truck but there are better solutions available. Also sometimes its not efficient to do so because of the raised aspect of a sport utility vehicle or short roof length of a truck. A roof bike rack system is popular with sedans also because of the versatility and usefulness.
This piece of mind is great for stopping during a trip to the mountain trails or back home. Other bike racks for cars may not be the best fit for passenger vehicles like sedans. Most cars like these wont have a hitch to mount a bike carrier on. Spare tire and truck racks would also be out of the question. Trunk racks are the other options. These are better for weekend riders as they can come off easily during the work week. But for the serious rider that rides daily after work or even during lunch breaks a roof rack is the proper choice. There are so many options when it comes to bicycle carriers these days.
In some circumstances cars have integrated crossbars fitted to start with. There are many manufacturers of this type of device but the most popular brands are Thule and Yakima. These type of racks can provide storage for up to five bikes and allow access to the cars boot or hatch. This way of transporting bikes can help protect them from getting scratched or clipping other cars or signposts however it is important to remember that your car has the extra height on top. Additionally it is sometimes a struggle to fit bikes onto the racks especially with bigger vehicles such as SUVs and people carriers.
