Boot Clips Racks These bike racks work by fastening straps around the edge of a cars boot or bumper. Two arms attach to the bike underneath the top tube and straps or bungees hold the bike in place. Although the initial installation is quite tedious due to adjusting strap lengths they can then be used in just a couple of minutes. These models require very little lifting are suitable for nearly any bike and is the cheapest style of bike rack. Like hitch racks these models impair boot access are vulnerable to high curbs and make it more difficult to fit into parking spaces.
This allows for maximum vehicle clearance once mounted on the vehicle. The setup is easy as most come pre-assembled and made to be used one way so you will never get it wrong. For rack carrier models that can carry multiple bikes there are usually separate tie downs for each bicycle for better reliability and security. Another popular type of Allen bike rack is the hitch mount models. These like the trunk models have individual tie-downs for racks that carry several bikes. The design of the rack arm is such that it can be folded out of the way when not in use. This is a very convenient feature.
To get the most benefit and use out of your bike its important to take the time and choose the right one for your situation. Bike rakes are usually broken down into two categories - ones that go on top of your vehicle and ones that go behind. Both of these types work perfectly when installed correctly but your vehicle may only support one type. Read the instructions and label before purchasing any bike rack to ensure it will install properly on your make and model vehicle. If you choose to install a rack that mounts on the top of your vehicle be sure to watch for low clearances as you drive.
