Cycle Rack / July 19, 2018 / Avelaine Labrecque
There are basically 4 types of bicycle racks available today. Here they are: Roof Mounted Bike Racks Roof mounted bike racks are a popular choice for bike storage and transportation today. The bike is conveniently situated on the roof of the car or SUV and the back of the vehicle is left easy to access. If you have a roof rack already mounted on your vehicle it makes this a much easier choice. However there are some versions that work without a car roof rack. The downside to a rack on the roof is that it exposes the bicycle to the elements. Flying rocks and debris can hit the bike and cause damage.
Bike racks are used for the protection of both the bike and the vehicle. A roof mounted bike rack is frequently used and it is ideal for carrying bikes in cars trucks and other similar vehicles. A roof bike rack can hold up to four bikes at a time. Some roof mounted bike racks come clamped with a camper roof and are used as a conventional roof rack for sports vehicles. Rear hitch-mount racks are another commonly used type. Rear hitch-mount racks better known as receiver hitch racks can carry up to five bikes. To carry one or two bikes rear ball-hitch mount racks are ideal.
There are metal cables on the market that help secure the bike to the vehicle but they will only be of use if there is a place on the vehicle where the cable can attach. The Saris Bones 3 is an exception b/c it is secured to the vehicle with metal strapes. When deciding which bike racks for cars will work best for you consider how high you can lift a bike by yourself and then hold it in position with one hand while securing the bike to the rack with the other hand. A rack on top of an SUV can be quite a reach especially if your bike is a heavier model like a full suspension mountain bike.
