Styles of Hitch Mounted Bike Racks Hanging: This is the most common type of hitch mounted bike rack and comes in a number of sizes to accommodate up to five bikes. They do not however accommodate non-standard bikes. Full Tray: In the full tray hitch mounted bike rack bike wheels rest on a tray; and this type will accommodate any type of bike and can carry multiple types at the same time. Most have a two bike capacity but a converter kit can be purchased to carry two additional bikes.
Try to buy one that is already assembled. It makes the job of mounting it on the trunk a whole lot easier. The down side is that some people do complain that its easy for bikes to get stolen - and have had this happen! This is because the trunk mount is so easy to install and remove that a bicycle robber (if there is such a thing) will be able to get their dirty hands on your precious baby in no time. So if theft is an issue then the trunk mount bike rack might not be the answer. Also each maker is best suited to certain cars. You will have to check this out with the maker or in the fine print section when shopping online.
Also there are bike racks that attach to receiver hitches. These racks are very convenient because you can remove them easily after use but you must have a receiver hitch to use this type. Again that adds expense. And if you have a pickup they also make bike racks for the bed of the truck. The type that I have been using for the last couple of seasons is the type that attach to the spare tire of my vehicle. These types of Bike Racks only work if you have a spare tire on the back of your vehicle. Usually these vehicles are SUVs. And my vehicle is a Jeep Wrangler so this was the type of bike rack that I decided to purchase.
