Bike Rack / July 19, 2018 / Colette Plaisance
The better trunk mounted racks have individual cradles for each bike. These cradles insure the bike does not slide around on the support bars and makes securing the bike much easier. When hauling more than one bike the cradles help keep the bikes separate so that your custom paint job is not ruined. It is also important that the bike racks for cars keep the bikes off the vehicle if you plan on switching the rack from vehicle to vehicle this is something to be aware of when you put if on a new vehicle put a new bike on the rack or change up the regular order in which the bikes are placed on the rack.
Because there are a wide range of prices out there and because there are many features available in all price ranges never start with price considerations first. Instead consider the following: Tip 1: What vehicle are you planning to use the rack on? You need to know exactly what type of vehicle and if at all possible exactly which vehicle you will mount the carrier on. You need to know all this so you can decide on how you want it to mount on the vehicle. Will it bolt to the frame? Will you be mounting it on brackets or braces attached to a bumper? Once you know the details you can choose the right rack for your specific vehicle.
Try to buy one that is already assembled. It makes the job of mounting it on the trunk a whole lot easier. The down side is that some people do complain that its easy for bikes to get stolen - and have had this happen! This is because the trunk mount is so easy to install and remove that a bicycle robber (if there is such a thing) will be able to get their dirty hands on your precious baby in no time. So if theft is an issue then the trunk mount bike rack might not be the answer. Also each maker is best suited to certain cars. You will have to check this out with the maker or in the fine print section when shopping online.
