If you have a car with a hatch back and no hitch receiver your choice would be narrowed down to a trunk mount bike rack or the roof top bike rack. Now you need to check that the model you are going with will fit the car you drive. Also make sure that the rack includes all the extras like locks extra bars or straps if you need them. More expensive racks often have good padding for protection life time guarantees and good customer support but they dont always include all the parts you need. The fine print and reviews of most products will soon let you know.
Most popular variations are the trunk and hitch Bell bicycle rack models. These are easy to use and install. Mounting the rack on your car is straightforward with the included straps and hooks like other trunk-mount models from other manufacturers. To carry more than two or three bikes a 4 bicycle rack like the Hitchbiker from Bell is what cyclists seek out to carpool with friends and family. The proper size receiver hitch will be necessary for this option. The great thing about Bell racks are that they are affordable. However dont equate the low price for the product being cheap.
Some trunk racks come pre-assemble which is ideal. There are many parts that come with car racks for bikes and having to not have to assemble the unit is great. Also you need to consider whether you can store the bike carrier in your trunk while not in use or is there a secure and safe way to leave it on. Being able to leave your bikes on the rack while attached to your trunk is also something to think about. After or before you go cycling you may want to stop for some food or a drink and taking your bicycles off the rack to lock them off is just a hassle. So many bike racks now come with locks or some sort of locking mechanism so that your expensive bikes are safe from theft.
